HONG KONG: In a move signaling Beijing’s intent to bolster diplomatic engagement with Washington, China’s Vice President Han Zheng will attend the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump on January 20. The announcement, made on Friday by Chinese state media, reflects China’s readiness to foster constructive dialogue with the incoming US administration.
According to China’s national television broadcaster, Han’s attendance is at the invitation of the US. “We are prepared to enhance dialogue and communication with the new US government, address differences effectively, and expand mutually beneficial cooperation,” reported China Central Television (CCTV).
China reiterated its commitment to promoting stable, healthy, and sustainable relations with the US, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win collaboration.
“We are ready to identify a proper path for China and the US to coexist and cooperate in this new era,” CCTV stated, underscoring Beijing’s interest in maintaining a positive trajectory for bilateral relations.
President-elect Trump, who has been vocal about recalibrating the US-China relationship, recently indicated optimism about his communication with Chinese President Xi Jinping through representatives. However, Trump’s forthcoming administration has drawn attention for its strong stance on China, including appointing notable China critics like Senator Marco Rubio as Secretary of State.
Trump has also promised significant changes to trade policy, threatening to impose an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods unless China takes stronger measures to curb the trafficking of fentanyl, a potent narcotic contributing to the opioid crisis in the US. While campaigning, he proposed tariffs exceeding 60% on Chinese imports.
The participation of a senior Chinese leader in Trump’s inauguration highlights Beijing’s intent to navigate these challenges through diplomacy, aiming for a balanced and cooperative relationship in the face of shifting dynamics.
