KUALA LUMPUR: As Malaysia prepares to celebrate Merdeka Eve and National Day 2026, Rapid KL is extending selected public transport services to help thousands of Malaysians travel safely and conveniently to celebration venues.
Selected Rapid KL rail and bus services will operate around the clock on August 30 and 31, supporting public movement during one of the country’s busiest celebration periods.
The extended rail operations cover Rapid KL’s Light Rail Transit (LRT), Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and Kuala Lumpur Monorail services.
Rapid KL said train frequencies on several key routes will also be adjusted according to passenger demand and conditions at stations. Additional trains may be introduced when necessary, particularly when passenger numbers increase or platforms become crowded.
The Sunway Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Line, selected bus routes and Rapid KL On-Demand services will also operate for 24 hours during the celebration period, giving commuters more options to get around without relying entirely on private vehicles.
The extended services are intended to support people attending the Merdeka Eve celebrations on the night of August 30 as well as the National Day celebrations in Putrajaya on the morning of August 31, 2026.
Free shuttle buses to support Putrajaya celebrations
For those travelling to Putrajaya, Rapid KL has prepared 103 buses for free shuttle services operating along two dedicated routes.
The first route, MS01, will connect Putrajaya Sentral Station with Jalan Tun Abdul Razak in Precinct 2.
The second route, MS02, will operate between the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) and Jalan Tun Hussein in Precinct 3.
MS01 will begin operations at 2pm on August 30 and continue until 2pm on August 31. MS02 will operate from 4am until 2pm on August 31.
The free shuttle services are designed to make it easier for visitors to reach celebration areas while encouraging people to leave their private vehicles at home. With large crowds expected, the initiative could also help reduce traffic pressure around Putrajaya.
Thousands of personnel to support commuters
Behind the extended services will be more than 5,000 front-line personnel, who will work in shifts throughout August 30 and 31.
Their responsibilities will include supporting daily operations, managing passenger movement, monitoring crowded areas and helping maintain a safe and orderly environment at stations and major transport points.
For many commuters, this behind-the-scenes preparation may be just as important as the additional trains and buses. National Day celebrations bring together families, young people, tourists and visitors from across the country, creating a significant demand for reliable transportation.
Rapid KL is therefore encouraging members of the public to use public transportation when travelling to celebration venues.
Passengers are also advised to plan their journeys ahead of time, check their travel arrangements and make sure their Touch ‘n Go card has sufficient balance before beginning their trip.
Commuters should also follow instructions from Rapid KL personnel, particularly when travelling through stations and areas experiencing heavy crowds.
A smoother Merdeka celebration starts with planning
National Day celebrations are about much more than fireworks, performances and ceremonies. They are also about bringing people together.
But when thousands of people head toward the same destination at almost the same time, getting there can become a challenge. Long traffic queues, limited parking and crowded roads can quickly turn an exciting day into a stressful one.
That is why public transportation can make such a difference during major national celebrations.
The decision to extend selected Rapid KL services gives Malaysians another opportunity to plan their journeys around public transport rather than spending hours behind the wheel.
For families, it can mean less stress. For visitors, it can mean easier access to celebration areas. And for the wider community, fewer private vehicles on the roads can help ease congestion.
The message is simple: plan early, travel smart and give yourself extra time.
Those heading to Merdeka Eve and National Day events should check the latest service information before travelling, as operating arrangements may be adjusted according to crowd levels and real-time conditions.

The human side of Malaysia’s National Day journey
Every National Day celebration tells a story, but not every story happens on the stage.
Some happen on a train filled with families wearing the colours of Malaysia. Some happen when strangers help one another navigate a crowded station. Some happen when parents take their children to experience the excitement of National Day for the first time.
For many Malaysians, the journey to the celebration is part of the celebration itself.
This year, Rapid KL’s extended services and free shuttle buses are more than a transport arrangement. They are an effort to help people come together, move safely and experience the nation’s 69th National Day with fewer barriers.
As the crowds gather and Malaysia prepares to celebrate, a little planning could make the difference between spending the evening stuck in traffic and spending it where the memories are being made.
Travel early. Follow official instructions. Use public transport where possible. And most importantly, enjoy Merdeka safely and responsibly.
