World News

Port Louis, March 11 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a grand ceremonial welcome upon his arrival in Mauritius on Tuesday, marking the beginning of a significant two-day state visit. As the chief guest for the island nation’s National Day celebrations, PM Modi is set to engage in high-level discussions with Mauritius’ top leadership and explore new avenues for collaboration.

Expressing his gratitude, PM Modi posted on X:
“Landed in Mauritius. I am grateful to my friend, PM Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, for the special gesture of welcoming me at the airport. This visit is a wonderful opportunity to engage with a valued friend and explore new avenues for collaboration in various sectors.”

A Grand Welcome at the Airport

Upon his arrival at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, PM Modi was warmly received by Mauritius’ Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam with a traditional garland. The reception was attended by key dignitaries, including the Deputy Prime Minister, Chief Justice of Mauritius, Speaker of the National Assembly, Leader of the Opposition, Foreign Minister, and several other senior officials. Over 200 dignitaries gathered to extend their welcome, underscoring the deep-rooted ties between the two nations.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

During his visit, PM Modi will meet Mauritian President Dharam Gokhool, hold discussions with PM Ramgoolam, and interact with leaders from across the political spectrum. Several key agreements are expected to be signed, focusing on capacity building, trade expansion, and tackling cross-border financial crimes—reinforcing India’s commitment to Mauritius’ development.

Before departing for Mauritius, PM Modi had emphasized the significance of this visit, stating that it would usher in a “new and bright chapter” in bilateral relations.

Focus on Community and Development Initiatives

A major highlight of PM Modi’s visit will be his engagement with the Indian diaspora in Mauritius. As nearly 70% of the island nation’s population is of Indian origin, this interaction will celebrate shared heritage and cultural ties.

In addition, he will inaugurate two major India-supported projects—the Civil Service College and the Area Health Centre—both aimed at strengthening Mauritius’ institutional and healthcare capacities.

India’s Strategic Partner in the Indian Ocean

PM Modi underscored Mauritius’ strategic importance, describing it as “a close maritime neighbor, a key partner in the Indian Ocean, and a gateway to the African continent.” He highlighted the deep-rooted historical, cultural, and democratic values that bind the two nations.

As part of the National Day celebrations, a contingent of the Indian Armed Forces, an Indian Navy warship, and the Akash Ganga skydiving team from the Indian Air Force will participate in the grand event on Wednesday, further solidifying defense and security ties between the two countries.

Talks on Chagos Islands Issue

India has reiterated its support for Mauritius in its discussions with the UK over the Chagos Islands sovereignty dispute. The issue is expected to feature prominently in PM Modi’s discussions with PM Ramgoolam, following the UK’s announcement last year to transfer control of the islands to Mauritius after more than five decades.

A Relationship Built on Trust and Shared Values

This visit marks PM Modi’s second trip to Mauritius, the last being in 2015. As one of the largest trading partners of Mauritius, India continues to play a pivotal role in its economic and infrastructural development.

With deep-rooted historical ties, mutual trust, and a commitment to progress, this visit is expected to strengthen the enduring friendship between India and Mauritius—paving the way for an even brighter future.
