Nepal Bans Former PM KP Sharma Oli from Traveling Amid Nationwide Protest Investigation

World News

KATHMANDU, September 29 — In the wake of one of Nepal’s most devastating civil uprisings in recent history, the government has officially imposed travel restrictions on former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and four senior former officials. This move comes as part of a broader investigation into the deadly unrest that erupted earlier this month, claiming dozens of lives and shaking the political core of the nation.

The unrest began on September 8, sparked initially by a brief social media blackout. But what started as a youth-led protest quickly snowballed into widespread public outrage over economic hardship, corruption, and a perceived suppression of freedom. The anger culminated in a deadly crackdown that left at least 73 people dead, reduced parliament and government offices to ashes, and ultimately toppled the sitting government.

Now, Nepal’s Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki, leading the country until March 2026 elections, has launched a high-level commission to probe the violent chain of events.

The five officials under the travel ban include:

  • Former PM KP Sharma Oli
  • Ex-Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak
  • Former Intelligence Chief Hutaraj Thapa
  • Two unnamed senior bureaucrats

The commission, which recommended the travel bans, insists the individuals may need to be summoned “at any time” for questioning. They’re now barred not only from international travel but also restricted from leaving the Kathmandu Valley without official clearance.

Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal confirmed that the bans are “already in effect” and are critical to ensuring the transparency and effectiveness of the ongoing investigation.

Adding further gravity to the situation, the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) reported an estimated US$600 million loss to the private sector. The automobile, hospitality, and retail industries were hit particularly hard during the unrest.

KP Sharma Oli has since claimed that “infiltrators” were responsible for the escalation and suggested that foreign-supplied weapons may have played a role in the bloodshed — allegations that have yet to be verified.

In the wake of tragedy, Nepal stands at a critical crossroads. This moment calls not just for justice and accountability, but for national healing and a return to trust between the state and its people. Behind the headlines and political maneuvering are the stories of families torn apart, businesses shattered, and youth voices crying out to be heard. As investigations continue, the world watches, hoping Nepal finds a path forward that honors truth, dignity, and the will of its people.
