Kylian Mbappe had the chance to rescue Real Madrid deep into stoppage time, but his penalty was saved as Jose Mourinho’s side suffered a painful 1-0 defeat to Real Betis on Friday.
The result ended Madrid’s perfect start to the La Liga season under Mourinho, who had guided the club to three consecutive victories since returning for his second spell in charge.
At La Cartuja, Troy Parrott became the unlikely hero for Betis, scoring his first goal for the Spanish club and giving the home side a memorable victory over one of Europe’s biggest teams.
Madrid created enough opportunities to take control of the match, but Betis goalkeeper Alvaro Valles produced a series of crucial saves when his team needed him most.
Vinicius Junior came closest early on when he struck the post after receiving a dangerous pass from Arda Guler. Mbappe also found himself denied twice following a rapid Madrid counter-attack, with Natan and Marc Bartra throwing themselves into the action to prevent what looked like promising scoring opportunities.
Madrid continued to push forward, but Betis gradually grew into the contest.
Then came the moment that changed everything.
With just nine minutes remaining, Betis took the lead. Thibaut Courtois initially made an excellent save to deny Nelson Deossa’s header, but the rebound fell perfectly for Troy Parrott, who reacted quickly to fire the ball into the net.
For Parrott, it was an important moment after joining Betis from AZ Alkmaar last month on a five-year contract. The Republic of Ireland striker had already built a reputation for scoring regularly in the Netherlands, and his home debut gave Betis supporters an early glimpse of what he could bring to the team.

The Betis goalkeeper guessed correctly, saved Mbappe’s penalty and sparked celebrations around La Cartuja.
The victory moved Betis level with Madrid on nine points after four matches and gave the club valuable momentum ahead of their upcoming European campaign.
For Mourinho, the defeat was difficult to explain.
“We were really dominant, created a lot going forward and had plenty of chances,” the Portuguese coach said after the match.
Mourinho also refused to blame the referee for the disallowed goal or the penalty incident, instead accepting that football can sometimes produce results that do not reflect the balance of play.
“I have nothing to reproach my players for,” he said. “We probably deserved to win, but deserving to win does not earn you any points.”
That final line perhaps summed up Madrid’s night perfectly.
They created chances. They hit the post. They forced important saves. They appeared capable of taking control of the match.
But Betis were more clinical when it mattered.
And when the decisive moment arrived, Valles came out on top against Mbappe.
The defeat also opens the door for Barcelona to strengthen their position at the top of La Liga. Barcelona can move three points clear with a fourth consecutive victory if they defeat Valencia at Mestalla on Sunday.
Madrid now have little time to dwell on the setback. Their attention quickly turns to Europe, with Italian champions Inter Milan visiting the Bernabeu next Tuesday for Madrid’s Champions League opener.
Betis, meanwhile, will take their confidence into their European campaign when they travel to France to face Lille.
For Madrid, this was a reminder that a strong start does not guarantee an easy season.
For Betis, it was a night to remember.
And for Mbappe, the missed penalty will be the moment everyone talks about — even though the story of the match was much bigger than one kick.
