The fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran appears to have collapsed after renewed military exchanges, with US President Donald Trump declaring that the agreement is effectively over.
Speaking during a NATO summit, Trump expressed strong criticism of Iran following overnight military strikes carried out by the United States and Iran’s response targeting American military bases in the Gulf region.
According to Trump, he no longer sees any value in continuing discussions under the current circumstances. He described the latest developments as evidence that the ceasefire had failed and suggested that the United States would not continue engaging unless Iran demonstrates a genuine willingness to negotiate.
His remarks came shortly after global oil markets reacted sharply to the escalating tensions, with crude oil prices climbing nearly five percent as investors worried about the possibility of a wider regional conflict.
Despite his criticism, Trump confirmed that he would remain in contact with businessman and diplomatic envoy Steve Witkoff, along with his son-in-law Jared Kushner, both of whom have been involved in previous discussions with Iranian officials. However, he emphasized that any future diplomatic progress would depend on Iran taking the initiative to return to meaningful negotiations.
Trump also accused Iranian leaders of failing to honor previous understandings related to the ceasefire agreement reached on June 17. He claimed that Tehran had publicly contradicted discussions held behind closed doors, particularly regarding commitments linked to Iran’s nuclear program.
The renewed tensions have once again placed the Middle East at the center of international attention.
