KUALA LUMPUR, April 16 — With smiles, handshakes, and a rich display of culture, Chinese President Xi Jinping was warmly welcomed to Malaysia today at Istana Negara. This visit — his first to the country in over a decade — carries deep symbolism, not just in diplomacy, but in the friendship shared between the two nations.
His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, personally greeted President Xi at the royal palace around 10:30 a.m., setting the tone for what promises to be a meaningful three-day state visit. Their handshake — firm and respectful — signaled a strong bond rooted in history, mutual trust, and future aspirations.
Also present were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, accompanied by his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, both Deputy Prime Ministers, and several Cabinet ministers. The occasion wasn’t just a formality; it was a proud moment for Malaysia to host one of the world’s most influential leaders on such a grand scale.
The air buzzed with ceremonial splendour as both nations’ anthems rang through the grounds of Istana Negara, played by the Royal Malay Regiment Central Band. A 21-gun salute boomed in the background — a tradition reserved for the most esteemed guests. President Xi stood tall as he inspected the Guard of Honour, made up of over 100 disciplined personnel from the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment.
In a beautiful gesture of cultural respect, Malaysia’s National Department of Culture and Arts treated the Chinese President to a traditional dance performance, infusing colour and soul into the morning’s formality.
Later, His Majesty hosted a private meeting with Xi and his delegation, followed by a special exchange of commemorative gifts. As the sun sets, the royal halls of Istana Negara will come alive again — this time for a State Banquet in President Xi’s honour, a celebration of shared history, trust, and cooperation.
This visit marks Xi’s second time on Malaysian soil as President — his last in 2013, a pivotal moment that elevated Malaysia-China ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
According to Wisma Putra, President Xi will also sit down with Prime Minister Anwar this evening. The two leaders are expected to dive deep into discussions on strengthening bilateral ties, expanding cooperation, and sharing perspectives on pressing regional and global matters.
A separate official dinner will be hosted by Anwar at the Prime Minister’s residence in Putrajaya, offering yet another moment to connect not just as world leaders, but as friends of the people.
Xi’s stop in Malaysia is part of a wider Southeast Asian diplomatic tour, which also includes Vietnam and Cambodia — reflecting China’s commitment to regional unity and collaboration.
Malaysia and China share a long-standing relationship that began in 1974. Just last year, they celebrated 50 years of diplomatic ties — a milestone shaped by trade, tourism, and people-to-people connections. Today, China remains Malaysia’s largest trading partner for the 16th year in a row, with total trade reaching RM484.12 billion so far in 2024.
As Xi’s motorcade moves through the streets of Malaysia, it’s more than just a visit — it’s a reminder of the power of diplomacy, the richness of cultural respect, and the enduring strength of friendship.
