Trump Announces $12 Billion Aid Package to Support American Farmers Amid Trade Fallout

World News

US President Donald Trump unveiled a $12 billion aid package for American farmers yesterday, aiming to provide relief to a vital community struggling under the weight of trade tensions and tariff policies.

Speaking at a White House roundtable with agricultural producers, Trump emphasized that the measures were “very vital action to protect and defend American farmers.”

Farmers, a cornerstone of his political support, have faced significant challenges since his return to office in January, including retaliatory tariffs from trading partners and rising costs for imported goods crucial to farming.

“We love our farmers, and as you know the farmers like me,” Trump said, expressing personal support for the sector. The $12 billion aid will mostly consist of one-off payments to crop farmers, funded by a “relatively small portion” of tariff revenues.

The ongoing trade row with China has particularly hit the soybean sector, with exports plummeting and Chinese buyers delaying orders from the US autumn harvest. Falling prices further strained farmers’ livelihoods, though a recent trade truce aims to restore purchases of commodities like soybeans and sorghum. Trump expressed optimism, saying Chinese President Xi Jinping would likely deliver even more than promised on soybean purchases following their recent summit in South Korea.

The aid package also addresses cattle farmers, who have seen beef prices surge due to tighter herd supplies, droughts, and disruptions in imports from Mexico caused by pest issues. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins confirmed an initial $11 billion release for crops, with an additional $1 billion reserved for areas in greatest need.

Trump attributed many of the economic challenges facing farmers to policies by former President Joe Biden, while acknowledging a growing affordability problem impacting American households. The announcement comes as Trump prepares for a campaign roadshow to promote his economic agenda, starting with a speech in Pennsylvania.

Beyond numbers and policies, this aid package is a reminder that behind every tariff statistic and trade figure, there are families, farmers, and communities striving to make a living and feed the nation. These measures may provide some relief, but the resilience and hard work of American farmers remain the backbone of the country’s food security.
