Thailand Rolls Out Multi-Billion Baht Relief to Protect Transport Fares Amid Fuel Price Shock

World News

Thailand has taken a decisive step to shield its transport sector and everyday commuters from rising fuel costs, approving a relief package worth over two billion baht. The move comes as global fuel prices continue to climb, largely driven by ongoing tensions in West Asia, putting pressure on public transport operators and logistics providers.

Government spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek confirmed that the cabinet has endorsed a comprehensive support plan valued at approximately 2.06 billion baht. The initiative is designed to ease the financial burden on key transport sectors, including public buses, freight trucks, and for-hire vehicles, all of which have been significantly impacted by fuel price volatility.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has emphasized that the rollout of this financial assistance must be handled with strict oversight. Authorities have been directed to ensure the process remains transparent, accountable, and verifiable, so that the support reaches those who genuinely need it.

According to officials, the primary goal of this package is to stabilize transport fares and prevent sudden cost increases that could ripple through the economy. By supporting operators, the government aims to keep fares affordable for the public while maintaining reliable transport services. This is particularly crucial during the busy Songkran period, when travel demand surges across the country.

To streamline access, the Department of Land Transport has opened registrations for eligible operators between April 16 and April 19. Applications can be submitted online or at transport offices nationwide. Once verified, funds will be distributed directly through PromptPay, ensuring quick and efficient disbursement.

While this policy focuses on numbers and systems, its real impact lies in people’s daily lives. For drivers struggling to keep their vehicles running, small transport business owners trying to stay afloat, and families relying on affordable travel, this relief offers more than financial support. It provides stability, reassurance, and a sense that they are not facing rising costs alone. In uncertain times, such measures can help preserve not just economic balance, but also public confidence and everyday dignity.
