Rising Waters, Rising Concern: Sangam Under Flood Alert

World News

Srinagar, Sep 03 – A sense of urgency and concern is rippling through South Kashmir today, as the water level in river Jhelum at Sangam has surged past the flood alert mark. Officials are now on high alert, working around the clock to ensure public safety as weather conditions remain unpredictable.

Er Showkat Hussain, Chief Engineer of the Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Department, confirmed that water at Sangam is rising at an alarming rate—nearly 1.5 feet every hour. “We are fully mobilized,” he said. “Our teams are already on the ground, keeping an eye on vulnerable spots. Sandbags and other safety measures have been deployed to minimize potential damage.”

Although the water level at Ram Munshi Bagh in Srinagar remains normal for now, the fast-changing situation has placed the entire region under watch.

A minor breach at Vecho Nala in Kulgam was reported, but thanks to swift action, it has already been contained. “That’s the only incident so far, and our teams are continuing their work non-stop,” added Er Showkat.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah wasted no time in calling an emergency meeting this morning with the Divisional Commissioner, Deputy Commissioners, and other senior officials to review preparedness. All district officers have been instructed to remain vigilant and respond without delay if the situation worsens.

Meanwhile, prominent leaders including Nasir Aslam Wani and Sakina Itoo are expected to visit the Vecho Nala site to assess the situation first-hand and assure residents of support.

With rainfall still continuing across the Valley, the risk of further water level rise remains high. Authorities are urging people to stay away from rivers and streams, avoid unnecessary travel, and remain alert to official advisories.

This is not just about rising water—it’s about readiness, responsibility, and community care. Let’s stay safe, informed, and help one another through this testing time.
