Peace & Prosperity Must Walk Together: Khaled’s Message at ASEAN–China Defence Luncheon

World News

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin delivered a powerful and timely reminder during the ASEAN–China Defence Ministers’ Luncheon in Kuala Lumpur — that Southeast Asia’s peace and prosperity are inseparable, and safeguarding them requires collective effort and unwavering cooperation.

Hosting the gathering, Khaled emphasised that ASEAN deeply values China’s continuous role in strengthening regional stability, fostering mutual respect, and encouraging collaborative progress. He highlighted that the partnership goes beyond maintaining peace — it is about nurturing shared growth and trust across nations.

“Prosperity and security are inseparable and interdependent. With regional peace comes shared prosperity, and with shared prosperity comes respect, trust, and the enduring relationships that make lasting peace possible,” Khaled shared in his opening remarks.

He celebrated ASEAN–China ties as a relationship built on dialogue, trust, and shared aspirations — stressing that a strong, peaceful Southeast Asia benefits the entire global economy, including China, which remains a vital force in international trade and connectivity.

Khaled also acknowledged China’s significant contributions through initiatives such as the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, Global Civilisation Initiative, and Global Governance Initiative — positioning China not only as a key partner, but as a catalyst for global growth.

However, he also highlighted the responsibilities that come with such influence. ASEAN, he said, hopes China will continue to champion international law, encourage mediation, and help avoid conflicts before they unfold — keeping dialogue and mutual respect at the forefront.

China’s Defence Minister Admiral Dong Jun and ASEAN defence leaders attended the luncheon, held alongside the 19th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) and ADMM-Plus at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from October 30 to November 2.
