Hannah White’s mother, Kathleen Nelson, was gravely ill, her undiagnosed pneumonia having developed into septic shock. After receiving the devastating news that her mother had only hours to live, White immediately booked a flight from Dallas, Texas, to North Dakota, with a layover in Minneapolis.
Her journey, however, took an unexpected turn when mechanical issues delayed her first flight from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport by over an hour. This delay jeopardized her chances of catching the connecting flight to North Dakota, leaving her distraught.
“I broke down in my seat,” White shared in her video. “The thought of not being able to say goodbye to my mom was unbearable.”
A Captain’s Extraordinary Kindness
In her moment of despair, White explained her situation to a flight attendant. While the airline’s automatic system had rebooked her on a flight the next day, she knew that would be too late. That’s when Captain Keith Napolitano, the pilot of White’s flight, stepped in.
Napolitano contacted the pilot of the connecting flight in Minneapolis, requesting a delay to give White a chance to board. Against the odds, the second pilot agreed to hold the flight for nearly 30 minutes—a rare gesture in commercial aviation.
Delta staff and passengers also rallied to help. White was moved to the front of the plane to ensure a swift exit, and a fellow passenger even handed her a map of the Minneapolis airport to speed her path to the gate.
“My mom passed away the next day,” White tearfully recounted. “Because of Delta’s kindness, I had 24 more hours with her. I was able to tell her I loved her one last time and comfort her, just as she had done for me all my life.”
