TIANJIN, September 1 — In a powerful and emotionally charged message from the northern Chinese city of Tianjin, President Xi Jinping of China spoke out against what he described as rising “bullying behaviour” in global politics. His comments came as he hosted leaders from across Asia for a two-day summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), calling for unity, fairness, and cooperation amid global instability.
Addressing an audience that included Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Xi stressed the importance of rejecting Cold War mentalities and divisive geopolitical tactics.
“We must adhere to fairness and justice,” he said firmly. “We must oppose Cold War mentality, camp confrontation, and bullying behaviour.”

Reflecting on the organization’s past resilience, Xi praised the “Shanghai Spirit” — a commitment to mutual trust, shared benefits, equality, and consultation — as a guiding force. “Despite tumultuous times, we have achieved success by practicing the Shanghai Spirit,” he said. “Looking to the future, we must continue to stay grounded, move forward together, and ensure that this organization plays a stronger role in shaping a just and stable world order.”
