Fewer foreign workers, more jobs for Malaysians: DPM Zahid outlines government’s priorities

Malaysia will continue taking steps to gradually reduce its reliance on foreign workers while creating more employment opportunities for Malaysians, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has announced.

The move is in line with the direction of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), with the government aiming to balance the workforce needs of industries with the priority of providing jobs for local workers.

In a Facebook post, Ahmad Zahid, who also serves as the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said the government had reviewed feedback from ministries and agencies involved in foreign worker employment.

He emphasised that decisions on foreign worker recruitment must be made collectively to address challenges surrounding worker quotas and employment limits.

According to Ahmad Zahid, the government recognises the importance of ensuring that businesses have access to the workforce they need while protecting employment opportunities for Malaysians.

He said the matter was discussed during the third Cabinet Committee Meeting on Foreign Workers, which he chaired at Parliament today.

The government’s approach is intended to ensure that workforce policies reflect the actual needs of different industries without losing sight of the importance of local employment.

Reducing dependence on foreign labour is a significant issue for Malaysia as the country works towards strengthening its workforce, supporting economic development and creating sustainable employment opportunities. Industries must continue to operate effectively, but Malaysians should also have greater opportunities to participate in the country’s economic growth.

Ahmad Zahid reiterated that the government would continue working towards policies that support businesses, improve employment prospects for Malaysians and deliver benefits to the wider public.

The challenge ahead will be to ensure that any reduction in foreign worker dependence is managed carefully, allowing industries to adapt while creating meaningful job opportunities for the local workforce.

The announcement reflects the government’s continued focus on balancing industry requirements with national employment priorities under the 13th Malaysia Plan.
