Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has publicly defended Lamine Yamal after the young FC Barcelona star faced criticism from Israeli officials for waving a Palestinian flag during Barcelona’s La Liga title celebrations.
The 18-year-old football sensation became one of the most talked-about figures this week after he was seen holding a Palestinian flag while celebrating with fans during Barcelona’s open-top bus parade through the streets of the city. The celebration came after the club secured its second consecutive La Liga championship.
The moment quickly sparked global reactions online. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz strongly criticized Yamal, accusing the footballer of promoting division and “inciting hatred” against Israel through his public display of support for Palestine.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, Katz urged Barcelona to distance itself from the player’s actions, saying there should be “no place for incitement or support for terrorism.”
However, Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez firmly rejected the criticism and defended the young athlete’s right to express solidarity with Palestinians.
Sanchez responded by saying that waving the flag of a recognized state should not be considered an act of hatred. He added that millions of Spaniards share sympathy and concern for the Palestinian people and praised Yamal for expressing his views openly.
The incident has once again highlighted the growing political tensions surrounding the ongoing Gaza conflict and how global sports figures are increasingly becoming part of international conversations beyond football.
Support for Palestine remains widespread across many parts of Spain, and Yamal’s gesture resonated with many supporters. Reports from Gaza also showed artists painting murals of the Barcelona star holding the Palestinian flag among the ruins of refugee camps, symbolizing admiration for his public stance.
Meanwhile, Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick acknowledged the controversy, saying he personally “didn’t like” the action but respected Yamal’s freedom to make his own decisions.
Relations between Spain and Israel have significantly worsened since the beginning of the Gaza war following the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023. Diplomatic tensions increased further after Spain officially recognized a Palestinian state in 2024, leading Israel to recall its ambassador.
The controversy surrounding Lamine Yamal reflects how sports, politics, and public opinion are becoming deeply connected in today’s world. While some view athletes as role models who should remain neutral, others believe sports figures have the right to speak openly on humanitarian issues affecting millions globally.
