Northern Japan is facing renewed danger as temperatures suddenly rise following two weeks of historic snowfall that brought life to a standstill. Authorities have issued avalanche warnings, urging residents to stay alert amid the risk of heavy, wet snow sliding from rooftops and slopes.
Since late January, relentless snowstorms have buried communities like Aomori under drifts reaching nearly two meters. Residents struggled to leave their homes, schools shut down, and businesses were forced to halt operations.
Today, temperatures in Aomori climbed to 8°C, melting the snow and increasing the chances of avalanches. Officials cautioned that falling snow can cause severe injuries—or even fatalities. “We ask affected residents to be careful and stay mindful of falling snow and avalanches,” said Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Masanao Ozaki at a press briefing.
The extreme winter weather has already taken a heavy toll. Since January 20, 35 people have died and 393 others have been injured across Japan, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency. Many victims were caught under collapsing roofs or fell while attempting to clear snow.
While Aomori’s snow accumulation dropped below 1.6 meters today for the first time in four days, travel disruptions continue. Local broadcaster ATV reported residents navigating narrow paths carved through towering walls of snow—often taller than a person.
Tragic incidents continue in other regions, too. In Niigata, along the Sea of Japan, one man was found dead under the wreckage of his snow-collapsed house, while another perished when his garage caved in, Fuji Television reported.
The government has mobilized troops to assist with clearing massive snow drifts in northern areas. Forecasters warn that cold weather will return this weekend, bringing additional snow to northern cities.
For residents, the storm’s end does not mean relief. With memories of the deadly snowfall still fresh, communities are left navigating not only snow and ice but the emotional weight of a winter that has profoundly affected their lives.
