SRINAGAR – In a significant disruption to Kashmir’s vital fruit economy, Asia’s second-largest fruit market, Sopore Fruit Mandi, will remain shut on September 9 and 10. The decision comes in response to the continued closure of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, a critical route for transporting perishable fruit across the country.
The announcement was made by Fayaz Ahmad Malik, popularly known as Kaka Ji, the President of Sopore Fruit Mandi. Addressing reporters, he stated, “Due to the blockade of the highway, transportation of fruit has become impossible. After thorough discussion in a general meeting with all stakeholders, we have agreed to suspend the mandi’s operations for two days.”
