Highway Blockage Halts Business: Sopore Fruit Mandi Announces Two-Day Shutdown

World News

SRINAGAR – In a significant disruption to Kashmir’s vital fruit economy, Asia’s second-largest fruit market, Sopore Fruit Mandi, will remain shut on September 9 and 10. The decision comes in response to the continued closure of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, a critical route for transporting perishable fruit across the country.

The announcement was made by Fayaz Ahmad Malik, popularly known as Kaka Ji, the President of Sopore Fruit Mandi. Addressing reporters, he stated, “Due to the blockade of the highway, transportation of fruit has become impossible. After thorough discussion in a general meeting with all stakeholders, we have agreed to suspend the mandi’s operations for two days.”

The Sopore Fruit Mandi isn’t just a trading hub—it’s the economic pulse of the region, connecting thousands of apple growers in Kashmir to national markets. With the apple harvesting season currently in full swing, this shutdown is more than just a pause—it’s a potential blow to livelihoods.

Traders and growers alike are anxious. The fear of spoilage, market loss, and falling prices looms large. Many have voiced their concerns, warning that continued delays in transportation could lead to massive financial setbacks. Stakeholders are now urging authorities to expedite restoration of traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu highway before irreversible damage is done.

A Human Moment Amid Crisis

For the apple growers of Kashmir, this isn’t just about business—it’s about feeding families, educating children, and surviving another season in an already challenging economy. Every crate that doesn’t make it to market carries the weight of months of hard work. As the trucks sit idle and orchards wait, so do the hopes of thousands.

Let this serve as a reminder of how fragile yet vital our infrastructure is, and how deeply interconnected our roads are with people’s lives.
