Colombo: In a swift and compassionate response to Sri Lanka’s urgent healthcare needs, India has donated a significant consignment of life-saving medicines, reinforcing its role as a steadfast ally in times of crisis.
The Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka announced on Thursday that India has gifted 50,000 ampoules of Furosemide injection (20mg/2ml) to address a critical shortage in Sri Lankan hospitals. The consignment was officially handed over by Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha to Sri Lankan Minister of Health and Mass Media, Nalinda Jayatissa.
India’s Continued Commitment to Sri Lanka’s Healthcare
Highlighting the deep-rooted partnership between the two nations, the Indian High Commission emphasized India’s unwavering support to Sri Lanka, particularly in the health sector.
“India has always been a dependable friend and first responder for Sri Lanka in times of hardship, including medical emergencies,” the official statement read.
India’s assistance in Sri Lanka’s healthcare sector has been both extensive and timely:
- During the COVID-19 pandemic, India supplied over 25 tonnes of essential medicines in May 2020 and donated 500,000 doses of Covishield vaccine in January 2021.
- In February 2022, India provided 100,000 Rapid Antigen Test kits to aid pandemic control efforts.
- Amid Sri Lanka’s economic crisis, India extended a $1 billion credit line in March 2022 to ensure a steady supply of essential goods, including medicines. This facility was further extended until March 2024 at Colombo’s request.
- In April-May 2022, India provided over 26 tonnes of drugs and medical supplies to key hospitals, including Peradeniya University Hospital, Jaffna Teaching Hospital, and Hambantota General Hospital.
India’s Broader Healthcare Initiatives in Sri Lanka
Beyond emergency aid, India has played a pivotal role in Sri Lanka’s long-term healthcare development. Notable initiatives include:

✅ Construction of a 150-bed multi-specialty hospital in Dickoya.
✅ Development of a new surgical unit at Batticaloa Teaching Hospital.
✅ Infrastructure upgrades and medical equipment support at Jaffna Teaching Hospital, Kilinochchi District Hospital, and Mullaitivu District Hospital.
