Srinagar, April 1 – In a move that brings relief and empowerment to women across Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah officially launched free bus rides for women on State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) and Smart Buses on Monday.
Standing by his commitment made during the Budget session, Abdullah expressed optimism that this initiative would ease daily travel challenges for women, whether they are heading to work, school, or simply going out for leisure.
“We promised free rides for women, and today, we are delivering on that promise. We hope this makes their lives easier and enhances their sense of safety and independence,” he told reporters.
A Step Towards Greater Mobility
For many women, commuting has been a daily struggle, especially with rising transportation costs and safety concerns. This initiative aims to remove financial barriers and give women the freedom to travel without worry.
“Whether they are going to college, visiting a market, or just stepping out to relax, they deserve safe and affordable travel options,” Abdullah emphasized.
Concerns were raised about the financial impact on SRTC and Smart Buses, but the Chief Minister reassured citizens that the government would cover any revenue shortfalls from the state Budget. The service will be available in all districts where these buses operate.
Amit Shah’s Visit to J&K: Politics & Development
Speaking about Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s upcoming visit to Jammu and Kashmir, Abdullah clarified that it was planned well in advance and was not directly linked to the recent Kathua encounters.
“His visit was scheduled before those incidents unfolded. Of course, security will be reviewed, but that’s not the only agenda,” he explained.
Shah’s itinerary includes a political rally in Jammu and developmental project reviews in Srinagar, including inaugurations of key infrastructure projects.
Reflecting on past engagements with Shah, Abdullah highlighted that the Union Minister had previously extended financial support when the state requested it.
“Last time, we asked for more funds, and we got them. This time, we’ll ask for what we need, and I am confident we will receive support,” he remarked.
Waqf Amendment Bill: A Deep Concern
On the proposed Waqf Amendment Bill, Abdullah voiced strong opposition, calling it an unfair move targeting the Muslim community.
“Every religion has its own institutions and charity systems. Our Waqf supports numerous social and religious causes, and it’s disappointing to see only our community’s charity system being targeted,” he stated.
While acknowledging that the final decision rests with Parliament, Abdullah made it clear that his party will fight against the bill with full force.
“We will never support this bill. Our MPs will oppose it strongly in Parliament,” he affirmed.
A Promise Kept, A Fight Ahead
With free bus rides for women now a reality, Omar Abdullah has delivered on a promise that could transform mobility for thousands of women in J&K. However, his administration also faces critical political battles ahead, from negotiating financial aid to resisting controversial legislative moves.
For now, as women across the state step onto buses without worrying about fares, one thing is clear—this initiative is more than just free rides; it’s about dignity, accessibility, and a step toward a more inclusive Jammu and Kashmir.
