PUTRAJAYA: The government is set to launch a trial Quick Response (QR) code system exclusively for Malaysians this month to streamline immigration checks at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminals 1 and 2.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail announced that 40 special lanes equipped with the QR code system will be introduced to address the persistent congestion at Malaysia’s primary entry points, particularly during peak travel periods and festive seasons.

“The QR code system drastically reduces immigration processing times to just 5–7 seconds, compared to the 15–25 seconds required with conventional automatic gates,” Saifuddin said. He emphasized that the technology not only enhances efficiency but also strengthens security and minimizes potential leakages.

Travelers using the QR code system will no longer need to present their passports during immigration checks but are still required to carry them throughout their journey.

Saifuddin reassured travelers that existing manual counters and automatic gates will remain operational alongside the new system, ensuring a seamless transition during the trial phase.

The initiative follows an earlier statement by Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, who in December highlighted the government’s commitment to adopting innovative solutions to expedite immigration processes and alleviate congestion at key airports like KLIA.

The trial is expected to demonstrate how cutting-edge technology can improve the travel experience while maintaining high security standards.
