European Nations Push for Lasting Peace in Ukraine, Back 30-Day Ceasefire as a Step Toward Permanence

Key European powers are rallying behind a proposed 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, urging that the temporary truce be transformed into a lasting peace. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, speaking alongside his counterparts from France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Poland, emphasized the need for long-term stability.

“We welcome the idea of a month-long ceasefire. That would be a crucial step. However, our goal is to ensure these 30 days pave the way for a permanent ceasefire,” Pistorius stated during a joint press conference on Wednesday.

This development follows a high-level meeting in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday between US and Ukrainian officials. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office released a joint statement confirming Kyiv’s willingness to accept the US-backed proposal for a 30-day ceasefire with Russia, with the possibility of extending it through mutual agreement. Additionally, the agreement includes an immediate resumption of US military aid to Ukraine and the lifting of the pause on intelligence sharing.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump expressed optimism that Russia would reciprocate the ceasefire efforts. He also revealed plans to engage directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin this week to discuss potential pathways toward de-escalation.

As diplomatic efforts intensify, European leaders remain hopeful that the ceasefire initiative will serve as a foundation for enduring peace in the war-torn region.
