In an inspiring move to boost domestic tourism, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that Malaysians will receive up to RM1,000 in tax relief on individual income tax for entrance fees to local tourism centres and cultural programmes. This initiative, revealed during the Budget 2026 speech, aims to reignite Malaysians’ passion for exploring their own country as part of Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
As both the Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Anwar emphasized that the government’s goal is to attract 47 million tourists and generate RM329 billion in tourism income in the coming year — a bold and confident stride toward strengthening Malaysia’s tourism economy.
To achieve this, over RM700 million has been allocated to develop and promote the sector:
- RM500 million for the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign.
- RM60 million for promotional and cultural events.
- RM50 million to uplift local artisans in handicrafts, batik, and weaving.
- RM50 million as matching grants to encourage more international and chartered flights into Malaysia.
- RM25 million to upgrade tourism infrastructure and preserve UNESCO heritage sites, including Mulu National Park (Sarawak), Lenggong Valley (Perak), and FRIM Forest Park (Selangor).
- RM20 million to expand Malaysia’s health tourism programmes.
In addition, new geotourism products will be developed in Langkawi, featuring attractions like the Kilim Geoforest Park, Selat Panchor cave trails, and hiking routes within Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark — further elevating the island’s global eco-tourism reputation.
The government is also offering a series of tax incentives to empower tourism and cultural enterprises:
- Tax rebates up to RM500,000 for tourism operators renovating business premises.
- 100% income tax exemption for operators who record increased earnings from tourism packages to Malaysia.
- Full tax exemption for organisations hosting international-level Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE).
- 50% tax exemption for companies involved in cultural, arts, tourism, and international sports events with foreign participants.
This initiative is not just about stimulating the economy — it’s about rekindling national pride, preserving Malaysia’s heritage, and supporting local communities who bring the country’s rich culture to life. It’s an open invitation to every Malaysian to rediscover the beauty, diversity, and soul of their homeland.
So pack your bags, explore the wonders of Malaysia, and make your travels count — because this time, your adventures come with rewards.
