China has accused the United States of misrepresenting Beijing’s defence policy in a way that could obstruct improving relations between China and India.
The comment came from Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian during a press briefing, when asked whether China might use the recent easing of border tensions with India to limit closer cooperation between Washington and New Delhi.
Lin said China looks at its relationship with India from a “strategic and long-term perspective” and emphasised that the border issue is strictly a matter between the two countries. He added that China opposes any outside nation “passing judgment” on the dispute.
His remarks followed a Pentagon report stating that China “probably seeks to capitalise on decreased tension… to stabilise bilateral relations and prevent the deepening of US-India ties.”
