Iran has rejected claims that it is involved in the ongoing war in Yemen, following reports that the Iran-backed Houthi movement has seized more territory in the country.
Speaking to reporters today, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei insisted that Tehran does not interfere in Yemeni affairs. His comments came as the conflict continues to draw attention to the relationship between Iran and the Houthi movement.
“Iran does not interfere in Yemeni affairs,” Baqaei said, describing the Houthis as “entirely independent actors who make their decisions based on their own interests”.
The statement reflects Iran’s position that the Houthis operate independently and are responsible for their own decisions. Tehran has rejected the suggestion that it directs the movement’s actions in Yemen.
The Houthis, however, have long been described as an Iran-backed movement, making Iran’s latest denial significant in the wider discussion surrounding the conflict.
