LG Manoj Sinha Flags Off Kashmir’s First Apple Parcel Train: A Lifeline for Farmers and a Leap for the Valley’s Economy

World News

In a landmark moment for Kashmir’s agricultural economy, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha flagged off the first-ever dedicated parcel train carrying apples from Budgam to Adarsh Nagar, Delhi on Monday. The initiative is being hailed as a turning point for thousands of apple growers in the Valley, who have long struggled with slow and uncertain transport routes.

A Fast Track to Prosperity

“This is not just a train—it’s a fast track to prosperity for our farmers,” said LG Sinha during the inaugural ceremony. Speaking to the press and later on social media, he expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, crediting him for ushering in “a new era of trade and business for apple growers and traders of the Valley.”
He added, “This initiative will significantly reduce transit time, increase income opportunities for thousands of farmers, and boost the agricultural economy of the region.”

Strategic Timing, Massive Impact

The launch comes at a crucial moment. Recent landslides on the Srinagar–Jammu highway had paralyzed traditional transportation routes, leaving hundreds of apple-laden trucks stranded for days. The risk of produce going to waste was high.
But with the launch of eight dedicated parcel van coaches, each capable of carrying 23 tonnes of produce, farmers now have a reliable, faster, and more cost-effective alternative to road transport.

Leaders and Local Business Community Join Hands

The flag-off ceremony was attended by prominent figures including Jammu and Kashmir’s Agriculture Minister Javid Ahmad Dar, Railway Board’s Dr. Manoj Singh, DRM Jammu Vivek Kumar, and other senior officials. Also present were representatives from the local business community, signaling the collective hope and optimism this new initiative brings.

A New Era of Logistics and Livelihood

Calling the project a “historic achievement,” DRM Vivek Kumar emphasized Indian Railways’ dedication to national growth, stating that the new freight corridor reflects their commitment to efficient logistics and rural upliftment. Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Uchit Singhal echoed this, highlighting that the Budgam–Delhi freight route is poised to “revolutionize trade and industry in the region.”

Humanizing the Moment

For the people of Kashmir—especially the farmers who nurture every apple tree with care and patience—this isn’t just a railway project. It’s a beam of hope.
This train carries more than apples—it carries stories of hard work, dreams of better income, and the promise of a future where Kashmiri produce can reach national markets without loss or delay.

Every mile covered by this train is a testament to the resilience of the Valley’s farmers and the power of timely policy intervention. Today, as the wheels of the first parcel train roll out of Budgam, they carry with them the spirit of a people determined to thrive.
